What is airdrop & how does it work?

AirDrop is Apple’s proprietary method of sending files or data locally between two devices. The devices initially connect over Bluetooth, with Wi-Fi doing much of the heavy lifting when it comes to file transfers. The feature was first introduced on Macs in 2008. It expanded to iOS devices with the rollout of iOS 7 in 2013.

How do I send files using airdrop?

You can send files using AirDrop from any iOS or iPadOS app that includes the Share Sheet. Open the app from which you’re trying to send something. For example, open the Photos app if you’re trying to share a photo or photos. Select what you’re looking to send and tap on the Share icon.

Does airdrop work on iOS 7?

It expanded to iOS devices with the rollout of iOS 7 in 2013. AirDrop is excellent when it works, but if you have older hardware, you’re more likely to experience issues. Visibility issues are the most common problem people have with AirDrop—sometimes, the recipient doesn’t show up, no matter how hard you try.

Does airdrop support contacts only?

The Contacts Only option is available on devices that support iOS 10 and later, iPadOS, or macOS Sierra 10.12 and later. If AirDrop is set to Contacts Only on your device with an earlier software version, you'll need to adjust AirDrop settings to the Everyone option in Settings or from Control Center.
